VEGAS BABY!!
Renee & Darryl face off at the Rock 'N' Roll 1/2 Marathon
This will be Renee's 4th time at the Las Vegas 1/2 Marathon and Darryl's 2nd. Last year, Renee was able to hold Darryl off until mile 10, when he caught up and she crashed, BIG TIME! Renee ran her first marathon this year in June and had a busy triathlon season, culminating in her first 1/2 Iron Man Distance Triathlon in Calgary in August. Darryl competed in the 1/2 Iron Man in Calgary as well, but then went on to complete his first Iron Man in Montreal 6 weeks later (see article above). Darryl's Iron Man race was also his first marathon ever! After a year of training, what will happen at this years race??
Track Renee & Darryl on Race Day!!
For minute-to-minute updates on race day, visit www.competitorwireless.com, and sign up to track Renee and Darryl during the race. You will receive text messages as they hit various points in the race....it's like you're there! Ok, well not really, but as close as you can get without going to Vegas! The cost of the service is $2 for the first runner tracked and 1$ for each additional runner.
Good Luck Connie!
Joining Renee & Darryl in the 1/2 Marathon this year is Connie, an APEX client. She started her running career with a 5k, then moved onto a 10k, then thought, why not a 1/2 marathon?! Connie has been working very hard training for the Vegas 1/2 marathon, and everyone at APEX is excited to see her reach her goal. If you see Connie in the studio, please wish her good luck as race day approaches. (December 5, 2010)
Vegas Anyone?!
For anyone who would like to join them, Renee & Darryl would like to invite one and all to come on down. It may be a bit late to train for the race if you haven't already started, but it's Vegas! There's lot's of fun to be had... :) They could always use some encouragement from the sidelines. Allegiant Airlines always has some good package deals for direct flights and hotels. They will be leaving on Friday, December 3rd and returning on Thursday, December 9th.

My Iron Man Experience...
by Renee Sobering
I still remember turning on the TV when I was about 12 years old to see a mass of bodies writhing and splashing around in the water. That caught my attention. I continued to watch as people poured out of the water and started peeling off wetsuits, only to don bike helmets, grab their bikes, and head out on the road. As I listened to the announcers, I learned that they had a long ride ahead of them, 112 miles to be exact. Even with the race edited for television, it seemed to last forever! By this point, I was quite impressed, but that evolved into outright amazement when I found out that after the bike, these athletes were going to run a marathon! That was the first time I saw the Hawaii Ironman.
A litte voice in the back of my head said, "Wow, it would be cool to do that someday!", but quickly dismissed that notion, since I was really not much of a swimmer or a cyclist. In college, I worked at a facility that did testing and training for triathletes, both amateurs and pros, and that little voice in the back of my head came back. I had a friend teach me how to swim, and I asked my parents for a bike for my graduation gift. That's how it started.... Read More
Darryl's Iron Man Experience...
From Injured to Ironman
It has been quite a journey; just over a year ago, in the beginning of 2009, I could barley jog. Every time I tried jogging I would get a sharp pain in the front of my left knee and then the pain would stay around for a few days making it uncomfortable to kneel or bend deep. This had been going on for about a year. Before you ask, no I didn’t go to the doctor or get a professional opinion on what was wrong. Spring was approaching and I was getting frustrated because I wanted to do some triathlons that summer after not having been able to the previous two summers. I finally started focusing on what was going on with my knee and decided I would get it fixed no matter what. I signed up for the Big Sky State Games triathlon with the confidence I would get better well before then, and I did. Read More

Darryl & Renee Complete Their 1st 1/2 Iron Man
August 1st, 2010 - 4 a.m. and it is pouring rain at Ghost Lake Reservoir. I start to panic at the fact that neither Darryl nor I had the forethought to bring rain-gear. It was going to be one chilly race! As we had our pre-race breakfast of millet rice cereal, my mind raced, trying desparately to figure out a strategy for racing in the freezing pouring rain with only my sleveless lycra tri-suit.
Big Rocks - Prioritize Your Fitness Goals
If you take a jar, and fill it with large stones, is it full? Before you say yes, take some small pebbles, pour them into the jar, and watch as they filter in among the stones. Is the jar full now? Not quite.... take some sand and pour it into the jar. The sand will fill in around the pebbles and the large stones. It must be full now, right? Finally, pour some water into the jar; the water will fill up all the remaining space.
Now think for a moment; what if you had tried to put the sand and the pebbles in first? Fact is, it is physically impossible to fit everything in the jar, unless you put everything in in the correct order. Read More
