Las Vegas Half Marathon 2007
Running down the strip at 6:00 am before sunrise with Elvis, Blue Man Group, run-through chapels and lots of lights; what an experience. Zappos marathon and half marathon has to be one of a kind with so much to look at over the first 6 miles it just flies by but the next 4-5 miles before you get close to the end can be a little boring as you wind your way through the suburbs of Vegas. The suburbs probably are not that boring but when you come off the excitement of the strip it just seems that way.
One of our clients brought this half marathon to our attention; thanks Beth, and also convinced Renee to take part along with her. I think Beth just wanted someone to party with while she was in Vegas!! So Renee started training more seriously around 3 months before the Vegas half marathon working her way from 3 miles a couple times a week to 13.1 miles for her half marathon.
Renee had a great race for her first half marathon along with a couple of mix ups on the way. In Renee's training she worked her way up to 13 miles and got it stuck in her head that 13 miles was the distance of a half marathon but it isn't 13.1 miles is the correct distance. So when she passed the 13 mile marker during the race she was a little surprised because she thought she would be at the end. For a brief moment she was thinking she took wrong turn and ended up on the full marathon course after a few steps she figured out the end was in sight and also realized that a half marathon is 13.1 miles long, oops.
So even with that little confusion Renee did really well. She was 452nd overall out of 8178 racers, she was 83rd out of 4784 women and 17th our of 809 in her age group, finishing with a time of 1:44.49. Great race Renee.
Now that Renee has got one under her belt she plans on going back in December of 2008 and push her limits one more time. I think top 20 is in her sights!! Good luck.
